Eleanor Poynter Jamison Chair in
Media Ethics and Press Policy
The Department of Journalism and Digital Communication at the University of South Florida seeks an outstanding media scholar as the next Eleanor Poynter Jamison Chair in Media Ethics and Press Policy, an endowed position on the St. Petersburg campus. The chair is one of the nation’s first endowed chairs in media ethics. Established in 1993, the chair has been held by only two previous professors: Jay Black (1993–2003) and Deni Elliott (2003–2022).
We seek candidates with established, influential research agendas focused on ethics, media, and technology. Within this wide-ranging theme, we emphasize expertise in areas such as digital surveillance and privacy; computational journalism; investigative data journalism; mis- and dis-information; accountability in machine learning; ethical considerations in the design and use of social media; and media policy and democracy. The Poynter Jamison Chair is expected to develop independent research programs that attract external funding.
The chair’s scholarship will help shape the future of journalism and digital communication and contribute to our mission to improve news coverage through inclusive reporting bolstered by technological advancements. The chair will contribute to strategic initiatives focused on community journalism, science and health reporting, visual storytelling, and digital production.
This nine-month, full-time position begins August 7, 2023. This is primarily a research position, although the successful candidate will contribute to teaching in our undergraduate and graduate programs. Salary is negotiable.
Minimum qualifications: a Ph.D. in journalism, communication, information science, or a related field; an exceptional record of scholarship in media ethics; teaching experience at the undergraduate and graduate levels; capability to meet university criteria for appointment to the rank of Professor
Preferred qualifications: a focus on emerging technologies, including AI, and their implications on journalism, communication, and public discourse; expertise in journalism on multiple publishing platforms; a record of collaboration across disciplines. candidates with diverse backgrounds are encouraged to apply.

Tenure Track Professor of Journalism: Race, News, and Community

The Department of Communication at the University of Utah invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Journalism: Race, News, and Community effective July 1, 2023.
Qualified applicants will have a Ph.D. in journalism, communication, media studies, or a closely related discipline or interdisciplinary program (ABD will be considered). The Department of Communication seeks applicants whose research, teaching, service, and praxis focus on journalism and race in the U.S. The successful candidate will engage with as well as facilitate academic and professional conversations about critical topics such as newsroom diversity, inclusive and fair reporting, sourcing, community engagement, community journalism and racial justice, structural racism in the news media industry, vernacular news media and cultural power, anti-racist news practices, and solutions journalism.
Also important is teaching journalism students skills to report responsibly on race. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to teach several journalism courses ranging from hyperlocal reporting of diverse communities to cross-disciplinary communication and race courses, including graduate-level courses.
Superior candidates will show: (1) evidence of an emerging research program using, for example, historical, legal, rhetorical, critical, qualitative, and/or quantitative methodological approaches, including articles in peer-reviewed journals, books, convention presentations, or research-based creative works; (2) a record of, or potential for, teaching excellence that would contribute to the Department’s teaching responsibilities, including undergraduate and graduate courses; (3) evidence of, or interest in, obtaining and managing grants; (4) experience in, or ability to connect with, the journalism community; (5) awareness and appreciation of how the intersection of journalism, race and community can articulate with historical and emerging concerns of communication studies.
