leadership change
By ANITA VARMA, DIVISION HEAD
Welcome to the lead-up to AEJMC 2023! My name is Anita Varma and I’m happy to serve as MED division chair this year. I have previously served as PF&R Chair, Research Chair, and Programming Chair. If you’re curious about what these positions entail and/or interested in joining MED leadership in the future, please let me know and we can chat!
In the spirit of sticking to (some of) the fundamentals of journalism, I thought I’d introduce myself using the 5 W’s.
Who (am I)? I’m Anita, also known as @anitawrites on Twitter.
What (do I do)? I’m an Assistant Professor at the School of Journalism and Media of the University of Texas at Austin and I also lead the Solidarity Journalism Initiative at the Center for Media Engagement. As Division Chair, I work with Yayu Feng (the Vice Chair in charge of Programming) and Joe Jones (the current Research Chair) on making sure that the Media Ethics Division is on track for a strong 2023 conference, in good standing across AEJMC, and expanding our impact on ethics education and research worldwide.
When (will you hear from me?) I’ll do my best not to pop up in your inbox too frequently, but I will send reminders leading up to key deadlines. If you have questions, concerns, or ideas, you are always welcome to send me a message at [email protected]
Where (am I located)? Austin, Texas. I moved to Austin after 10 years in the Bay Area in California, and I’m originally from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Why (am I part of MED)? My research, teaching, and public engagement all focus on the idea of solidarity in journalism as a set of ethical practices. MED was the first academic setting that recognized the value of this idea and gave me space to talk about it. Receiving the inaugural Davis Ethics award in 2019 launched the next stage of my work on solidarity in journalism in ways I did not imagine, and I will always be grateful to this division for all of the support, kindness, and constructive conversations over the years. Cheers to more to come!
